United States → Great Britain · Document research

Three handoffs: veterinary records, USDA endorsement, GB arrival.

An ordinary US departure needs a document conversation with the accredited veterinarian before the receiving carrier checks it. Keep the private signature, official endorsement and actual border arrival separate.

Not approved for travel decisions. This explains ordinary private, non-commercial cat/dog document handoffs between the US and England, Wales or Scotland. Northern Ireland, other species, sales, ownership transfers and exceptional movement categories need separate guidance. No complete entry checklist, individual eligibility, booking or travel date is supplied.

Begin with the correct US departure branch

The APHIS Great Britain destination instructions ↗ separate ordinary non-commercial movement from other certificate branches. This guide follows the ordinary private path: no sale or ownership transfer, up to five cats/dogs, with the owner or authorised person travelling within five days before or after the animals. Larger groups, competition exceptions, other species and other movement categories need their own review. Cargo handling alone does not choose the legal category.

Use the species and accompaniment options on the APHIS selector for shipments including dogs ↗ or the selector for shipments without dogs ↗. In PetWaymark’s scope, the latter means cats only. Describe who accompanies the animals and how a separate shipment relates to that person’s travel; the veterinarian selects the actual certificate. This page does not fill, sign or issue one.

The veterinarian and APHIS do different work

HandoffResponsible conversation
Completed veterinary recordThe USDA-accredited veterinarian matches the animal’s identity and evidence to the selected certificate and completes the private veterinary signature.
Official endorsementThe veterinarian and APHIS endorsement office arrange the separate government endorsement. A signed private form does not show that this step is complete.
GB receiving checkThe actual operator and entry checker review the animal and papers for this arrival. Endorsement does not reserve transport or establish border acceptance.

The APHIS destination page describes a 30-day private-signature period and a separate endorsement within ten days of GB arrival. The GOV.UK pet health certificate page ↗ instead describes entry within ten days of certificate issue, with an authorised official signature. Do not merge private signature, official issue and endorsement into one date. Show the actual papers to the veterinarian, APHIS office and receiving checker; ask which event their instruction refers to. This guide calculates no deadline or sea-travel extension.

APHIS also describes a narrow military-veterinarian exception. That does not waive endorsement for an ordinary private veterinarian. The exception and its eligibility are outside this guide’s working path; use the destination source for that separate enquiry.

Keep dog and cat records apart

The GB treatment instructions ↗ apply tapeworm treatment to dogs, with a veterinary entry tied to arrival 24–120 hours later. The US is not a direct-origin exemption. Ask about the actual recorded time and a delayed arrival; this site schedules neither treatment nor travel.

The cats-only APHIS selector repeats dog-treatment text. Its heading excludes dogs, while GOV.UK scopes this treatment to dogs. We show that mismatch and do not turn copied text into a cat treatment requirement. Ask your accredited veterinarian or APHIS about the appropriate species-specific record; PetWaymark has not obtained an authority’s explanation.

Confirm receiving arrangements before sending the papers onward

The GB document table ↗ lists the US with a Great Britain pet health certificate. The EU-outbound AHC process explained in the GB → France guide is a different handoff. For an animal with existing passport or other travel documents, ask the entry authority how the actual records apply; a return traveller is not assessed here.

Check the approved-operator register ↗ and then the actual service. The GB transport guidance ↗ separates its inbound air-cargo rule and exceptions from ordinary airline pet policies. Recognition in a register does not prove your selected flight accepts the animal or its handling product.

The APHIS certificate selectors refer Heathrow travellers to a paperwork pre-check before endorsement. Ask the actual receiving service whether that referral applies and what it needs. PetWaymark has not pre-checked the papers, booked reception or verified a particular airport service.

For arrival from outside the EU, GOV.UK’s arrival guidance ↗ separates document/microchip checks from customs clearance before collection. Identify who handles clearance and who releases the animal to you. An endorsed certificate alone does not answer those practical questions.

The US return needs its own preparation

For a dog returning to the US, begin again with the CDC history-based entry process ↗. A GB certificate is not its Dog Import Form receipt. For a domestic cat, use the separate CDC cat guidance ↗ and APHIS cat/state referrals ↗. Receiving-state and carrier requirements remain separate. The GB → US guide explains that outward handoff; it does not approve your return.

For your own unresolved certificate enquiry, use the accredited-veterinarian and APHIS support referrals on the destination page. For GB entry questions, use APHA’s official enquiry directory ↗. PetWaymark does not send enquiries on your behalf.

Take nine questions to the responsible people

Choose United States → Great Britain in the worksheet. Its four shared and five direction-specific questions have space for handwritten replies and source references. A tick means discussed, not accepted for travel.
