A CDC receipt, a state document, an official veterinary handoff.
Identify the US dog-entry process before choosing a GB veterinary document. Then ask what the receiving state and carrier need. Domestic cats use a separate reading path.
Write down the destination state and animal history first
A journey described as “Great Britain to the United States” still leaves two important questions unanswered: which US state or territory receives the animal, and which countries a dog has visited before arrival? Bring those details to the veterinarian and operator. PetWaymark does not ask you to enter or upload them.
The CDC dog-entry guidance ↗ uses the previous six months of country history and vaccination origin, for first entry and return. A GB departure does not erase a previous high-risk-country visit. The official navigator and actual records establish which instructions to examine; this page does not select an individual pathway.
Keep the CDC receipt separate from veterinary certification
| Item to discuss | Who supplies or reviews it |
|---|---|
| CDC Dog Import Form receipt | The importer uses the applicable CDC submission process and retains the receipt. In the exclusively low-risk six-month branch ↗, CDC describes this as its only required form; health, age, microchip and matching departure-country conditions still apply. |
| History-dependent dog evidence | The veterinarian and competent authority review the US-vaccinated high-risk branch ↗ or foreign-vaccinated high-risk branch ↗, when relevant. The latter has separate official certification, facility/airport and reservation conditions; accepted titer does not remove ordinary facility examination/revaccination. |
| US state or carrier papers | The receiving state and operator specify any separate veterinary documents. A CDC receipt does not establish that those other conditions are met. |
A document made for one purpose is not a substitute for another. For example, an existing pet passport or state-oriented EHC is not proof that a different CDC vaccination/microchip certificate has the accepted signatures. This guide has not verified a particular UK office’s process for endorsing an individual high-risk CDC form. Unvaccinated high-risk cases and exceptional categories need separate official instructions.
Read the general GB instruction and US-specific certificate scope together
The general GB non-EU travel page ↗ describes an EHC/EXA and a nominated Official Veterinarian. The US-specific dog certificate 8860 page ↗ says it is required for certain states, such as Massachusetts. These explanations have different scope. We do not convert them into either “every US-bound pet needs 8860” or “no veterinary paperwork is needed”. Ask the receiving state and your Official Veterinarian which completed documents apply to the actual journey.
The linked 8860 guidance notes ↗, dated 26 July 2024, describe Massachusetts and a Hawaii recommendation, and an authorised OV’s certification role. A recommendation is not a state’s confirmed acceptance of your animal. Read the notes with the actual certificate and current receiving-state conditions; their old date is kept visible. PetWaymark does not provide an application, specimen to fill in, signature or state approval.
Separate the application conversation from the pet’s booking
If the applicable veterinary process calls for an EHC, the official certificate page explains the GB application route and the nominated certifier. Agree with that veterinarian which evidence to bring and who receives the official document. Account registration or an application status on a government service is not final permission to board. PetWaymark has no accounts and submits nothing to that service.
Ask the actual operator about its documents, handling arrangements and receiving service. If the CDC branch requires a registered facility and matching airport, verify those details before choosing transport. Neither the general GB export page nor a published certificate title confirms a booking.
For a domestic cat, use separate federal and state guidance
The CDC cat section ↗ and APHIS domestic-cat page ↗ have a different federal reading path. Do not apply the Dog Import Form or dog-only certificate 8860 to a cat. The APHIS import overview ↗ keeps destination-state requirements separate. A federal agency’s absence of a general cat certificate requirement does not remove state, territory or carrier conditions; Hawaii/Guam are not cleared here.
Prepare the independent return to Great Britain
The GB document table for US arrivals ↗ and GB pet health certificate guidance ↗ belong to the return conversation. Ask which document is accepted for the actual animal and records. The outward CDC receipt and EHC do not approve entry into GB.
A returning dog also needs its separate GB treatment-record review ↗; do not apply it to a cat. Confirm the actual inbound operator and handling product using GB transport guidance ↗. The US → GB guide explains the ordinary US certificate handoff; it does not decide which document an individual returning animal must hold.
For your own unresolved GB export question, use the official APHA support links on the certificate page. For a CDC branch, follow the relevant CDC page’s official enquiry referral. PetWaymark does not contact those bodies or wait for a reply as a condition of this limited explanation.
Keep these decisions open until checked
- Actual six-month dog country history and vaccination origin; no individual CDC branch selected
- General GB non-EU EHC wording versus US-specific 8860/state scope remains explicit; actual veterinary/state document needs require confirmation
- An 8860 OV process does not establish which UK authority completes or endorses a different CDC certificate for an individual high-risk dog
- Actual US state/territory, airline and any required receiving facility/airport remain unconfirmed
- US-bound papers do not approve GB return; actual entry document, dog treatment and operator must be checked independently

Take nine questions to the responsible people
Choose Great Britain → United States in the worksheet. Its four shared and five direction-specific questions have space for handwritten replies and source references. A tick means discussed, not accepted for travel.
