A passport record. A carrier check. A separate return.
Start with the documents your pet actually holds in France. Then separate the veterinarian’s record, the operator’s check and the decision on entry into Great Britain.
Begin with the actual entry document
The French traveller overview ↗ illustrates a passport-based journey. The GB destination document list ↗ also describes alternatives for EU departures. A GB-issued AHC used by a returning traveller is a different situation from starting a journey with an EU-issued passport in France. Ask which completed document is accepted for your actual residence and records; do not obtain a GB outbound AHC just because the journey has a British destination.
Document choice is only the first discussion. The full entry rules also depend on identification, vaccination, accompaniment, animal numbers and restricted dog types. Ask the relevant authority about any condition outside this limited explanation before making a booking.
Read the records before arranging the crossing
GOV.UK passport-record guidance ↗ distinguishes a passport booklet from correctly completed records. Check ownership, identification and veterinary entries with an authorised veterinarian, and carry the original documents. Rabies entries in an EU passport must be made by an EU veterinarian; a treatment entry and a vaccination entry have different recording rules. PetWaymark does not inspect or store those records.
| Handoff | Who checks it | What to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Document and identification | Your authorised veterinarian, then the actual operator | Whether the original document and microchip record refer to the same animal, with the required entries completed. |
| Dog treatment entry | The treating veterinarian and receiving checker | The recorded treatment and actual GB arrival time. This row does not apply the dog rule to cats. |
| Transport and entry | The approved operator and receiving authorities | The selected service, pet acceptance and check location. A recognised company name alone does not settle these. |
A dog has an additional veterinary handoff
GOV.UK’s dog treatment instructions ↗ require veterinary tapeworm treatment 24–120 hours before GB entry, with the relevant details recorded. France is not a direct-origin exception. This is a dog-only rule; it is not a cat requirement. A delay may change whether the recorded interval fits the actual arrival. Ask the veterinarian and operator about the record and any necessary new treatment; this page calculates no appointment or arrival date.
Separate approval of a route from acceptance of your pet
Use the official approved-operator register ↗, then check the actual service with the operator. The GB transport guidance ↗ separately explains carrier conditions and air-cargo rules, including its stated exceptions. An outbound cabin booking elsewhere is not proof of a permitted inbound GB handling product.
The GB arrival-check guidance ↗ describes document and microchip checks on arrival; sea and Eurotunnel checks may take place before boarding. Ask where the documents and microchip will actually be checked and who receives the animal. No ferry, tunnel, airline slot or arrival service is reserved by this guide.
Plan the independent return to France
A GB entry decision does not establish permission to enter France again. Retain the passport and veterinary records, and discuss the return with the French veterinarian and actual EU entry authority. The French overview’s general return wording is not an assessment of every document or traveller’s residence. This guide does not select a passport exception or a certificate expiry.
For a question about your own GB documents, use APHA’s official enquiry directory ↗. Use the French overview’s official referral links for your own French preparation or return question. PetWaymark does not send these enquiries on your behalf.
Keep these decisions open until checked
- Actual traveller residence, completed passport records and accepted alternative document
- The selected approved operator and its current pet acceptance, check location and handling product
- Dog-only treatment record for actual GB arrival; no cat treatment inference
- Separate France re-entry document and residence assessment; no blanket interpretation of the French overview

Take nine questions to the people responsible
Choose France → Great Britain in the worksheet. Its four shared questions and five direction-specific prompts leave room for handwritten replies and document references. A tick means discussed, never accepted for travel.
